Acceleration Training & Osteoporosis

As National Osteoporosis Awareness Month approaches in May, a revolutionary fitness and wellness method that’s become the method of choice with global celebrities and elite professional athletes is showing itself to be a formidable weapon in the prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis. Acceleration Training™ (vibration training) is providing individuals with an effective method in the ongoing fight against Osteoporosis.

Although Power Plate North America has never marketed its products as medical devices (specifically marketed for fitness and exercise), the company is seeing its products bring compelling results to individuals and professionals dealing with Osteoporosis. Both published research and a host of anecdotal, first-hand experiences by doctors, therapists and Osteoporosis patients are supporting the use of Acceleration Training™ via Advanced Vibration Technology™. These products, like the popular Power Plate® product line, are backed as a highly-effective method of preventing and treating this condition that affects 44 million Americans at a cost of $17 billion in treatment annually. Kay Smith, a personal trainer and Pilates instructor from Colleyville, Texas, has experienced significant and compelling results with her Osteoporosis, utilizing Acceleration Training™.

“I have never had results like this even with weight training, which I had done for more than 15 years,” said Smith. “Even my doctor is amazed that after the huge drop in my bone density when reaching menopause, I am now building bone in my spine and hips without taking drugs or estrogen.” To date, resistance training and pharmacology have been the most common methods of treating Osteoporosis. However, conventional resistance training and its high-impact nature often present considerable challenges to the mature adult and elderly audiences that are facing the condition. Acceleration Training™ is now offering a proven solution, virtually custom-made for this audience.

“Conventional resistance training methods can create challenges for a wide range of the population either reluctant to, or unable to, engage in the time consuming and high stress obstacles associated with them,” said Scott Hopson, Director of Research, Education and Training for Power Plate North America. “Acceleration Training™ provides an exciting and holistic alternative, using the natural forces of gravity, in a significantly lees stressful and time consuming environment – as little as 20 minutes 3 times per week.”

In 2004, the American Journal of Bone Mineral Research published the results of a six-month study conducted with 70 post-menopausal woman, comparing bone scan results of those utilizing Acceleration Training™ (via Power Plate® equipment) over a 24-week period with those utilizing conventional resistance training over the same period. Bone scan results for the Acceleration Training™ group revealed a 1.5 percent bone mineral increase at the hip, while the resistance training group revealed no significant increase. As a bonus, the Acceleration Training™ group revealed significant improvements in postural control and balance, critical components to reducing falls which commonly result in fractures and significant injuries among those living with Osteoporosis. What is equally critical to note is that the Acceleration Training™ group achieved its results in half the time and with significantly less effort as those that utilized conventional resistance training – three 30-minute sessions per week for the Power Plate® exercise group compared to three 60-minute sessions per week for the resistance training group. In addition to this published research, a host of medical and therapy professionals including doctors, physical therapists, wellness & longevity therapists and chiropractors are reporting positive and compelling stories of success with their own patients. “At Pilates Central, we’ve been using Acceleration Training™ as a key adjunct to Pilates resistance training for a number of our clients managing their Osteoporosis,” said Donna Parise Byrne, a licensed physical therapist and owner of Pilates Central in Wilmette, Illinois. “Over the past 9 months, since we have incorporated the use of the Power Plate pro5 model into our therapies targeting Osteoporosis, we have documented a noticeably faster and substantial increase in bone density.”

Acceleration Training™ via Power Plate® equipment exploits the body’s innate reflexive response to disruptions in stability in order to stimulate a wide array of benefits including; but not limited to, increases in muscle strength, flexibility, hormonal release, lymphatic drainage, bone density and metabolic rates. Just as the leg kicks forward involuntarily when the doctor strikes the lower knee to test reflexes, the body’s muscles engage in an involuntary reflexive muscle contraction in response to the vibration stimulus from Acceleration Training™.

CHICAGO, October 4 – Power Plate North America, the established leader in advanced vibration health and fitness technology, announced today that its official education program for personal trainers, athletic trainers, physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists has been approved by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and the International Sports Sciences Association
(ISSA) for each organization’s member continuing education program.
Already widely accepted in the European health and fitness community, the Power Plate and its advanced vibration technology has become one of the most highly sought products among elite professional and collegiate sports trainers and rehabilitation specialists, and is now finding its way into the mainstream health and fitness community in North America.

“The approval of these three nationally and internationally recognized organizations is a critical step in our ongoing mission to bring advanced vibration training and its enormous array of benefits to the general population, regardless of age or physical condition,” said Lee Hillman, President and CEO of Power Plate North America. “Based on the rapid acceptance of vibration training in the European health and fitness industry and among elite athletic training and rehab professionals in the U.S. we are confident that this modality has arrived, and we’re excited to begin equipping more trainers and practitioners with officially
recognized expertise in its use.” ACE, NASM, and ISSA members will now be able to earn certificates in advanced vibration training and critical continuing education units (CEU) through either home study or live
workshop programs provided by Power Plate through each organization. The programs were developed by Chris Camacho, a foremost expert in the use of advanced vibration technology and Director of Education and Training for Power Plate North America. Members should consult their respective organizations for information on specific programs provided.
Originally developed by elite Russian Olympic trainers in the 1970s and now an accepted training and rehab method within the European health and fitness community thanks to the efforts of Dutch inventor and Power Plate founder Guus van der Meer, advanced vibration technology is currently being utilized by more than 30 professional and collegiate sports
teams in the U.S., including the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball. Elite athletic training hubs including the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Col., the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., and the Adidas Athletes’ Performance Center in Phoenix as well as an increasing number of health clubs, wellness and rehabilitation centers
are now featuring The Power Plate and its advanced vibration technology prominently.

“As with any new health or medical modality, it takes time to build the credibility and prominence that results in confidence and security among mainstream professionals to make the investment in a new modality for their own clients and patients,” said Garrett Giemont, strength and conditioning coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the 2003 NFL
Strength Coach of the Year. “As someone who’s been championing the cause of advanced vibration technology and the Power Plate, the development and approval of this official education program and by these organizations is very significant.”

Haarlem (NL)/ Dusseldorf (GER), 21 November – Within the framework of this year’s medical fair MEDICA, the international manufacturer of vibration machines, VibroGym® International, held a seminar among experts on “responsible training with vibration platforms in practice”.
Practitioners, physiotherapists and sports scientists swapped their knowledge with independent experts such as Prof. Dr. Klaus Baum (Cologne), Dr. Med. Gernot Felmet (Villingen-Schwenningen) and qualified sports scientist Jens Freese (Cologne).

50 participants had been invited and signed up to this exclusive private seminar on Dusseldorf’s exhibition site. In the seminar, latest study results were showcased that had been achieved from therapy for diabetics
and MS patients, whose symptoms could be considerably alleviated through training with medical certified vibration platforms. Freese presented a specific “prevention concept”, which has been developed by the German Coach Academy (German abbreviation: DTA) and for which health insurance can be accounted. Celebrity coach Arno Schmitt (Munich) showed the participants exercises adequate for three issue-areas in the field of prevention and rehabilitation: possibilities to allay symptoms MS patients suffer from, exercises that, for instance, effectively strengthen muscles after a knee operation as well as examples on how to use VibroTraining® within the scope of postnatal exercises after pregnancy.
